What is JASPER?
JASPER is an after school tutoring/study hall program that exists at the junior high and the high school. At the high school, students can attend voluntarily or be assigned by a specific teacher. During this time student can receive help from the teachers who are serving as monitors or can work independently. Students also have access to a laptop cart and are provided bus transportation (if eligible - see below.)
When is JASPER held?
JASPER runs Monday thru Thursday, right after school until 3:50 in the Triple Conference Room in the high school learning center. There is a calendar available on the 'Schedule' tab above that accounts for staff meetings, vacations, etc.
Who is eligible for transportation?
Any student who would typically be eligible for transportation services may use the JASPER bus, provided they have attended an entire JASPER session. (Students who are planning to ride the bus MUST stay in the Triple Conference Room until 3:50.) The JASPER bus drops students off at one of pre-determined stops around the community - please see the 'Transportation' tab above for additional information.
What if a student wishes to work with a teacher in their classroom, rather than at JASPER?
If a student is working with you in your classroom, they are permitted to ride the JASPER bus. In these situations, the student should sign up for the bus at the BEGINNING of the JASPER session in the Triple Conference Room and inform the JASPER monitors where they'll be working.
Please note that the JASPER bus is provided by at-risk funding and is NOT meant to be utilized for attendance at other extra-curricular activities, detention, etc. Only students attending JASPER or working with specific teachers may ride the bus.
Who monitors JASPER? What are their responsibilities?
We always have two teachers available at each JASPER session. Because we have found that many of the students coming in are seeking help with math, one of the two teachers is always a math teacher. The second teacher’s curriculum area varies day-to-day. The teachers monitor students to make sure they are completing academic work during this time and are also available to work with students one-on-one.
My child is being required to attend JASPER by a teacher. What does that mean?
Each teacher determines their own criteria for assigning a student to JASPER, but typically it is to help students catch up on missing work. If assigned, students should attend at some point during the window provided by their teacher and complete any missing assignments during that time. Please note that the consequence for not attending an assigned JASPER session is a Friday School. If you have more specific questions, please direct them to the teacher assigning the JASPER session.
What if a parent wants to require their student to attend?
